It was a warm but hazy morning. I stood on large section of smooth rocks on the northern shoreline of Monhegan Island. Located ten miles out in the Gulf of Maine, my intention was to capture a sense of this magical place where the island meets the sea.  The misty atmosphere, neighboring islands and lapping waves help express the scene. As I painted, a lone seagull landed on the pile of rocks near me. Who knows if the seagull was waiting, watching or resting so I quickly painted in the bird. Moments later, it flew away. Ten Miles Out 11x14 Oil on linen was given a studio finish.
