Recovery - A Time for Reflection

Neighborhood Walk 8x8 Oil
Lately, my lanai has proved to be a mood amplifier, allowing me to see and hear all the neighborhood sounds. A mocking bird sings regularly from a tree close to where I sit. The gentle warm breezes filter through the screens and the humidity warms me up. Spending my winter days in a tropical haven isn't so bad.
Funny how life constantly changes. Wasn't it just a short time ago, I told you of my goals to paint Florida this winter? It seems the best of well-made plans can be derailed anytime on the path of life. I remind myself to remain optimistic about the future.
The last two months (eight very long weeks), I have been at home recovering from major foot surgery with a bandaged left foot and doctors orders of nothing but elevation and non-weight bearing. This has made painting a challenge so I have been taking time off.

I am most grateful for my dear husband Chris and daughter Melissa who have worked tirelessly to care for me. My husband wrote in my Valentine's card poking fun, "Do you need any more ice, coffee, prunes, apple chips, figs, water, pillows, phone, computer, pencil, extension cords, pills, breakfast, lunch or anything else?". We were all laughing at the non-stop errands associated with recovery. No wonder I love them.
In truth, being laid up has given me time to think about art all day long, including my own. Self-reflection is necessary, so I have been using the days to consider my own practice. The last couple of months, I have been reading and analyzing, taking an online workshop, looking, studying and comparing, all of which has helped to keep me going. In my mind, lots of inner growth has occurred and I am excited to see my future paintings. So while my foot continues to heal, I will, no doubt, find a way to paint. Those creative juices are beginning to stir and I look forward to taking a neighborhood walk! |
Enjoy this first month of Spring!
